Let's be clear now: objectivity will be almost impossible here. I have a story with Final Fantasy VII that extends over several decades. The original game has changed my way of seeing the games, in general, for all my life in the future. These characters, this story and this world are permanently anchored in the marrow of my bones. The opening kinematics made me look for tissues in seconds. I was a ball of wrinkled feelings, I was addicted, I was captivated. The best I can do is measure this game next to other Final Fantasy titles. Even other RPGs have the impression of coming from different planets. Despite all this, let's talk about Final Fantasy VII: remake.
It's a story of eco-terrorists who take things in hand. This is identity, memory and agency. It is even love, diverted and diverted. You start as Cloud Strife, Soldier, First Class. As so many things happened to you at the beginning, it will be important later. You participate in a routine mission that takes a slightly pear shape, a trend that will continue. For this first mission, the story of remake reflects more or less the original. But from there, each rhythm is so much more detailed. All this is familiar, but again new? Each casual exposure line now has a lifetime. New lateral characters crawl, flash and yawn, from fertile soil. People like Jessie, Biggs and Wedge feel like real people with organic motivations. The neighborhoods pass from a static background to a tentacular disorder of streets and alleys. Foreigners whisper and tell their hopes, their deepest fears. Midgar is a real city, more than ever.
Also, people of this real city? They are all rendered in magnificent details and magnets. Tifa and Aerith inspire a true sorrow of love, you can count the hair on the barrett's chest, and cloud in emotional is more shocking than ever. So much face, and that's what you do? I did not woven parasocial links as strong with the characters of the game since I am 14 years old. All these praise, do you think, are piled up in the basic PS4 version of the game. I imagine that the pro shine is even cloud, somehow. Each character is also pretty, members of your group to anyone with whom you even exchange a dialogue line. Only non-reactive NPCs that revolve around the city slide down, one 7 out of 10. And do not let this sumptuous chatter distracting from the rest of the game. The whole city is crazy beauty. Wall Market made me want to go for my next evening, when that's the case. It does not matter if it does not exist. But how does it play, ask yourself?
The action oscillates well between satisfaction and struggle. Each individual movement is excellent, but you encounter real problems if you do not choose them judiciously. There is also a clear change in the style of play between the characters. While Cloud is at the end bearing, someone like Aerith needs more finesse. I spent a lot of time smoking, reconfiguring my material, to refine my equipment and recharge. Finally, each zone reveals its own internal rhythms, and your movement through the steps becomes more fluid. I never stayed totally stuck, even though I got closer to once. Do not deceive yourself, there is a lot of hard ground to go here.
One of the elements of remake is the new dungeons. For someone who intimately knows the original game, many sections came with bad surprises in the form of a dungeon. I would cross a kinematics, waiting for me to be done, when an entire scene would be revealed. Most of the time, it made sense, even though some sections seemed almost cruel in their new dimensions. Here is still a place where my bias is proficient. Knowing the story as I did, was I eager to get there, or was there a true bloating? For what it is worth, real discontent about the size and frequency of the dungeon was rather rare. Above all, I was starving for more conspiracy and more progress. On the other hand, if you are afraid that remake is light on the content, do not worry. Beyond the main fleshy quest line, there are many secondary missions to immerse yourself between your most serious missions. In addition, the mini-games of Wall Market, who are all completely intact and as strange as you remember.
For all my exulting recitals, remake is not completely perfect. If you have grieves grievances about the modern Final Fantasy games, they probably still have a house here. The dungeons are always filled with esoteric puzzles, the fight always oscillates between simple and crushing the soul, and the treasures still disappear forever under the fierce march of the plot. A new problem with which I struggled for a while or two was the IA players. They go ... well, but do not expect them to do something complicated. I lost a fight or two while waiting for healing before realizing that it was not going. Tifa will throw a cure or two, but it's nothing by which you can set your watch. No, most of the combat strategy should be planned and performed by you, in real time.
The original FF7 was also very good to kick your ass, to be fair. Slow tip toughness is not new, it just feels sharper in real time. I never had the impression that my failed reflexes also made me lose battles. Each resounding loss of remake comes down to poor decisions made hastily. Sometimes you need some tests to understand what these decisions are, but you always understand it. The few really desperate battles were not related to intrigue, so I could cut and run if I really did not have the choice. For all my struggles, the fight is always really satisfying. Each movement is nice, the different members of the group complement themselves beautifully and there is an infinite depth of strategy to explore. Customization is extended without feeling overwhelming, and your abilities have all the impression of doing something criticism when used at the right time.
My version of remake is full of history, with a brilliant green nostalgia, through all its solid surfaces. There is no way for me to see this game with something like objectivity. As cloud, my past collapses to my meeting, holding my members in a kind of ecstatic paralysis. I can not play this game without the original seizing my heart in his ghostly hands. And yet, it's still an exemplary experience. At the final games Final Fantasy, remake places always. The story is presented with the obsessive eye of an author, each scene tearing the ropes of the heart. The battles are a winding, but bloody affair, which never becomes bland. The graphics are ridiculous, turning each character into a magnificent spectrum, which will haunt your dreams. More than a constant understanding of Final Fantasy's platonic ideal, this game realizes something unusual. Here is the Final Fantasy VII you remember, the sparkling vision of your youth, spared by the decadences of time. Wherever Square Enix goes from here, we may not be able to get there soon enough. Final Fantasy VII: remake to your risks and perils.
